For owners doing their own billing

A Tally alternative for small business that bills from any device

KhataZone is billing-first software: you raise the invoice, and the double entry, the stock movement and the GST summary happen behind it. It is a fit for a business where the owner or a counter staffer makes the bills and the CA comes in at month end — and on the Business and Pro plans it exports Tally XML, so nobody has to give anything up to try it.

  • Opens in a browser on a phone, a tablet or the shop desktop
  • Nothing to install on each machine and nothing to keep updated
  • Tally XML export on Business and Pro, so your CA works as they do now
  • A 14-day trial with everything on, no card, run beside your old books

Free plan available · No card required to start · Works on phone and desktop

The six things people actually ask before they move

“The billing machine is at the shop, and I am not”

If your books live on one computer, then the answer to “what did we do yesterday?” lives there too. KhataZone opens in a browser and can be installed to a home screen, so the same company data is in front of you on a phone at a supplier's office or on the desktop at the counter. No file to carry, no copy to merge back later.

Only one person in the shop can really drive it

Software written for accountants asks accounting questions: which ledger, which group, which voucher class. If the person billing is not an accountant, they either learn all of it or they keep a parallel notebook. KhataZone asks for the invoice and derives the rest — the journal, the party posting and the trial balance are produced, not typed.

“My CA works in Tally and will not change”

They should not have to. This is the part most comparison pages get wrong: moving your billing does not mean moving your accountant. On Business and Pro, KhataZone exports Tally XML for masters and vouchers, plus a twelve-file CA pack in one ZIP, so what lands in your CA's hands is the shape they already work in. Their month end does not change at all.

Billing in one book, stock in another, neither agreeing

The common small-business setup is bills in one place and a stock register kept separately, so quantity and value drift apart quietly until a physical count exposes it. Here the same document does both: finalising the invoice moves the stock and posts the sale in one step. Multi-warehouse quantities and ex-GST valuation come off those documents, so there is nothing to reconcile between two systems.

Switching feels like a one-way door

It does not have to be one. Most businesses pick a date, enter opening stock and opening party balances, and bill in KhataZone from that day while the old records stay exactly where they are for the closed periods. Run both for a month if you want the comfort. Everything you enter can leave again as Tally XML or a CA pack whenever you ask for it.

Month end is a reconstruction job

If the returns are compiled from a pile of bills after the fact, every month is a small archaeology project. GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and the HSN summary build from your invoices as you raise them, so month end becomes a review of numbers that already exist rather than a week of assembling them. GSTR-2B reconciliation sits alongside them on the same plans.

How to move without stopping work

  1. 1

Open the company, not the archive

Sign up, enter your business details, GSTIN and state, and set your invoice series so it continues from where you are rather than restarting at one. This takes minutes, needs no card, and the 14-day trial has every feature switched on.

  2. 2

    Enter opening positions only

Add your items with HSN and the rate each carries, your customers and suppliers, opening stock quantities and the balances each party currently owes or is owed. You are entering a starting position, not re-keying years of history.

  3. 3

Bill here from a chosen date

Pick a cut-off — the 1st of a month is easiest — and raise every new invoice, purchase bill and payment in KhataZone from that day. Keep the old system open and untouched for anything before it.

  4. 4

Send your CA the same thing you always sent

At month end, export Tally XML or download the twelve-file CA pack and hand it over. Ask for a party ledger statement, GSTR-1 or GSTR-3B on screen and it is already built — you compile nothing.

What you get on the other side

Runs where you are

A browser on a phone, tablet or desktop, installable to the home screen. No per-machine setup and no version to keep in step.

Tally XML and a twelve-file CA pack

Masters, sales, purchases and a complete export as Tally XML, plus a ZIP adding sales and purchase registers, GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, HSN summary, trial balance, P&L and balance sheet as CSV. Business and Pro.

Double entry you never type

Nobody has to pick a ledger or a voucher class. Invoices, bills, credit and debit notes, receipts and payments post themselves, and the party ledgers, trial balance, profit and loss and balance sheet come out the far end.

Stock tied to the billing

Multi-warehouse quantities, transfers, low-stock alerts and a running register behind them — so stock is not a second system you keep in a book beside the billing and reconcile when somebody asks.

GST reports off the bills you raised

GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-9, the HSN summary and GSTR-2B reconciliation, computed from invoices already entered rather than a spreadsheet built at month end. Business and Pro.

The whole document set

Quotations, sales orders, delivery challans, purchase orders, purchase bills, credit and debit notes — not invoices alone, so nothing has to stay behind in the old system.

Should you actually move? An honest read

Tally is a mature, capable product that lakhs of Indian businesses run on, and a page that pretends otherwise is not worth reading. So the useful question is not which software is better in the abstract. It is narrower and more answerable: who in your business actually opens the software, and what do they open it to do?

Start with the case where you should not move. If you employ a full-time accountant who lives in Tally all day, who knows the voucher types, the cost centres and the exact way your books have been kept for years, then the switching cost is real and the gain is small. Their speed is the asset. Nothing on this page beats that. Stay where you are, and be glad you have them.

The other case is far more common among small businesses, and it is the one KhataZone is built for. The owner, or somebody at the counter, makes the bills. The CA visits at month end or receives files. Nobody in the building thinks in debits and credits. In that setup, software designed to be driven by an accountant is being driven by somebody who is not one — which is why the stock register ends up in a separate book and the returns get assembled from a pile at month end.

Shape matters as much as features. KhataZone is a web application: it opens in a browser on whatever device is in your hand, installs to a home screen if you want it there, and needs no software installed or updated on each machine. If your books currently live on one computer that has to be sitting in front of you, that difference is the one you will feel daily — not any line on a feature comparison.

Now the part that should decide it for a lot of people: you do not have to leave Tally behind to try this. KhataZone exports Tally XML for masters and vouchers, and the CA pack besides. Your accountant can keep their workflow, their software and their habits exactly as they are while your billing moves somewhere your staff can actually use. Moving your counter and moving your accountant are two separate decisions, and only the first one is being asked of you here.

Two caveats, stated plainly because you will find them out anyway. This is not feature parity and we are not claiming it — there is no e-invoice or IRN generation in KhataZone today, so if you depend on a capability you use now, check it exists here before you commit. And the pieces that matter most to a switcher, the Tally XML export and the GST reports, are on the Business and Pro plans; the Free and Starter plans do not include them, though the 14-day trial turns everything on. Run that trial alongside your current books rather than instead of them. A switch that is tested for a month is a switch that sticks.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to stop using Tally completely?
No. Most people move only their billing and keep their accountant working the way they already do. On the Business and Pro plans KhataZone exports Tally XML for masters and vouchers, so what you produce here can go into your existing accounting workflow at month end.
Will my CA still be able to work the way they do now?
Yes, and that is the point of the Tally XML export. Your CA receives masters, sales, purchases and a complete export as XML, or the CA pack ZIP that adds sales and purchase registers, GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, HSN summary, trial balance, profit and loss and balance sheet as CSV. Nothing about their process has to change.
Can I bring my old data across when I switch?
There is no automatic pull from another accounting package. The practical approach is to pick a cut-off date, enter opening stock and opening party balances, and bill in KhataZone from that day. Closed periods stay in your old records, where they are already complete.
Is KhataZone as powerful as Tally?
No, and we would rather say so. Tally is a deep accounting product with years of features behind it. KhataZone is billing, stock and GST for a small business where nobody is a full-time accountant. If you have one and they are fast in Tally, staying put is the sensible choice.
What if I change my mind — can I get my data out?
Yes. On a plan that includes the Tally export you can pull Tally XML at any time, or the CA pack ZIP: twelve files covering your registers, GST summaries, trial balance, profit and loss and balance sheet, plus the four XML exports. Your data stays exportable for as long as the account exists.
Do I need to install anything on my computer?
No. KhataZone opens in a normal web browser on a phone, tablet or desktop, and can be added to your home screen so it launches like an app. There is nothing to install per machine and no updates for you to apply.
